About Relational Somatic Therapy
Core Principles of Our Practice Approach
Honouring Lived Experience
We believe that every aspect of your lived experience is valid and serves as the ultimate foundation for your healing journey. Rather than pathologizing your present-day reactions or viewing them as flaws, this approach understands your emotional and physical habits as adaptive coping mechanisms that once kept you safe. We honour your unique history and the intelligence of your body's survival responses.
Deepening the Mind-Body Connection
Bringing a somatic focus strengthens your connection to your body, allowing for a greater awareness of your innate inner wisdom. By slowing down and gently tuning into the body, you can untangle heavy physical burdens. This increased interoception (the ability to notice internal signals) bridges the gap between what you logically know and what you physically feel, so your insights become fully embodied rather than just understood.
Creating Spaciousness in the Present Moment
By learning to track your bodily sensations without judgment, you create spaciousness in your present-moment awareness. This expanded capacity allows you to "witness" your own experiences, habits, and triggers in real time. Rather than becoming overwhelmed by emotional reactivity, you gain the clarity, groundedness, and perspective needed to make intentional decisions in your daily life.
Stabilizing the Nervous System
Trauma and chronic stress often leave the nervous system in a state of high alert or emotional shutdown. Somatic awareness provides an anchor to regulate and stabilize this system. Through attuned pacing and gentle physical awareness, your body learns how to complete natural healing processes and return to a grounded, connected state. You are left with a felt sense of safety within your own skin.
Recognizing Inherent Resilience
At the heart of this approach is the deep belief that the self is inherently resilient and capable of continuous growth. Healing is not about "fixing" what is broken, but rather re-establishing a compassionate, trusting relationship with yourself. By returning to your true self, you unlock your internal capacity to heal, thrive, and meaningfully navigate life’s challenges.
